Increased interaction radius doesn't stop people from going out to explore, it just makes it easier to play the game without being a public nuisance, like gathering in front of businesses, churches, on footpaths or walking trails, or at kids' playgrounds. It enables you to find a suitable place to do your raid or rocket battle while still being respectful of the people around you. It helps people with mobility issues reach the same gyms as their able-bodied friends, without being left at the end of a trail or the bottom of a staircase. It gives people more of the resources they need to play the game. Making it easier to engage = more spend, I would have thought. If I have fewer balls and potions, I am not going to buy more, I am going to play less. And the less engaged I am, the more I will get used to not playing, and the easier it will be to walk away completely. Other than luring people closer to sponsored locations, I can't think of a logical reason to roll this QOL improvement back.
