a games franchise's success is not built up in the single moment of release, It takes time for the fandom to grow and develop into a community that can still experience the game while sharing it with their friends, thus leading to more sales over time.
By your logic, Undertale would've been the most popular game of its era on the PC due to how much overexposure it had and people talking about it. but now look at it. The only people still talking about it are the most batshit crazed fans, where as Pokemon still has a more casual following, and appeals to both new and recurring consumers.
