Something the Pokémon series has above other monster-collecting RPGs of the like is this view through a childlike scope. Everything can go from whimsical, to gritty and cold at times, but nothing is given a particular hard focus. It's almost dream-like in that respect. I don't think it works as well if one aspect is taken to be the main focus; you lose the wonder behind the Pokémon world.
If you're going to play an "edgy" monster collecting RPG, why not just play Shin Megami Tensei? It's more refined in those regards already; Pokémon doesn't need the same treatment.
