It doesn't matter if the move was unpredictable. Metagross is a supercomputer and a champion-rank pokemon at that. There was plenty of time for it to recognize what was happening and respond appropriately.
We, the viewers, could easily comprehend what was happening when it happened. The idea that a Mega-Metagross wouldn't is laughable.
