As dedicated Mushrooms goes, Quagsire is king.
It also brings much needed Mushrooms and Potatoes to Cyan Beach (though Cramorant is also very good at Potatoes whilst rocking Extra Tasty Chance S)
I don't think it obsoletes Gengar by any means, since fiery herbs are useful too, and Gengar is way faster and gathers more berries which'll make it well suited to whatever ghost island may come.
Quagsire's weakness is its slow gathering rate and low carry capacity.
This is fine if you want to swap it in as a mono-ingredient gatherer to stockpile during the day, but it will under-perform overnight if it lacks an Inventory subskill.
