I know it's not exactly the point of the thread, I just needed to let this joy out onto the net. I've been Pokemon about 16 years now, since 1999. And I've never once encountered a random shiny, only the Gen 2 Gyarados, event mons, handouts, that kind of thing. It means for years I've been petrified of not being able to catch it when it finally comes.
Well, last night I encountered my first wild Shiny. A female Haunter in Y. A cold chill crept to my stomach, and not wanting to risk weakening it I just threw balls, and caught it after four or so. I just couldn't believe it. Then, today while level grinding some stuff, I run into a shiny Linoone in OR, and caught it too! I'm tempted to run out and buy a lotto scratchie or something.
If anyone like the me that once was is looking on at this thread in envy and moroseness, be not afraid - it'll happen when you're least expecting it. Just always be ready for it. Good fortune to all, and happy days anons <3
