As for the effect on future movies, see the 20th anniversary one. The failure of the last one is why they're using "Kanto" name in 20th movie, despite it having NOTHING to do with Kanto, and they're including Lucario, Charizard, Pikachu and Piplup, all in the same one movie. Because they're scared of a repeat. This is how it will affect future movies. Make them go all out on pandering, to make the movies sell.
I, for one, welcome this change. The pandering has made me want to watch a Pokemon movie, something that hadn't happened since the Arceus one.
