I guess it's a staple of the series that the game enters a sort of "battle mode" after an encounter. But just imagine how much quicker grinding could become. And how immersive the game could be, seeing your actual surroundings instead of an empty background.

Not true. FF Crisis Core, a 6 year old game on inferior hardware, had random encounter battles in the overworld. They actually looked really nice, too.
