That would have never happened without the Charizard fight as that is where they got the lead that got them there in the first place. Charizard plays a far important role in the story as without them there would have been no final act. Without bulbasaur Tim could have wandered down stream and found Mewtwo who btw set the whole thing up, with or without those bulbasaur Tim would have found his way to that spot.
