>>28759410I personally recommend avoid the animated series, its mostly repetitive and isn't that much fun to watch nowadays, but if you're curious you can watch some of the movie that are quite entertaining.
If you wanna start playing the game I recommend you pick up a copy of Black and White or their sequels because it provides a mostly fresh new story with newer monsters. And since Generation 7 is approaching in November that should keep you busy for a while.
Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver are excellent games as well, but they are really pricey nowadays so you should learn how to emulate them on your phone or on your computer.
