XY has some good features with the PSS, the amie, the trainer customization, megas are a nice concept, etc, but the core of the game is still not that good. Not really properly balanced for the exp share, trainers have too few pokemon, you are constantly interrupted by the circus called your friends, the graphic style for the overworld isn't exactly ideal, and the story is garbage.
Moving to more subjective or nitpick-y territory, I don't really like the art style, the animations are underwhelming, all the pokemon models look too washed out, the designs for the characters is mediocre, I hate the Lucario/Kanto wanking, the gen 6 dex is tiny, and I find the overall gen 6 dex mediocre.
I'll also add the two cents that after replaying XY a couple months ago, the level design is surprisingly not as bad as I remembered.
Generally would rate it above gen 7 and 8 at least.
