Ruby and Sapphire broke away in terms of design, plot, storytelling style, while also completely changing the battle mechanics.
Black and White was awesome in terms of story and setting. It made the story more cinematic, separated the non-native pokemon, made the camera more dynamic, etc. But did it really advance gameplay at all? Triple battles and like... shaking grass are the most significant things I can think of.
