It hardly matters if you do a few close in level objectives out of order, in fact that’s what makes it fun. The fact that you can do otherwise as well is also part of the fun. It’s YOUR adventure and YOURE free to have it. Like the natural progression from gen 1. And there’s plenty of “map design” as well. For example, after Mesagoza I went left, then hopped down the ledges to get the item, but got stuck on the lower path so I followed it through some rain, before eventually coming over the hill and seeing the mountain with windmills off to the horizon and the next town a little closer. It was a really nice moment, punctuated by a nice battle with that one Courier that’s as strong as the gym leader
