And sure, while there will be defenders, they will be in most likely minority, with the rest judging and scolding you, most likely with the undertones that "the trainer is using his Gardevoir" (of course they dont care for logic and common common sense, otherwise they'd remember you can't really trick or lie to your Gardevoir).
Still, the pressure and mockery would grow too big. At some point some cafes/establishments might being politely deny you the service because you "disrupt their state", etc etc. Your trainer license also most likely will be revoked by Leagues to avoid any kind of controversy.
Leaving together into the sunset probably the best option for your sanity and happiness.
