because the game is still fundamentally the same it's always been. it's a turn based rpg that's stayed true to its roots since the beginning. i was rather bitter, jaded and criticized USUM because it didn't cater to what i wanted or expected. but recently i've been catching up with other games, that do exactly what Pokemon's done with pandering to its older fanbase and greatly enjoyed it. for instance playing through FE Awakening the first time; i thought it was neat they never changed the formula even with a soft reboot of the franchise, even mentioning Marth and having Tiki be playable. and all the dlc i pirated, it was fun to see all the classic characters that made the franchise make cameos. and on top of that Dragon Quest does that all time, and i love those games. the biggest reason why i criticized Pokemon for it so harshly is because i do have emotional attachment to the franchise. for christ's sake i was 7 when RB came out, and have been getting the games ever since. the only games i skipped were RS, because i was in highschool and Pokemon "wasn't cool" anymore. but then i picked it right back up for FRLG, and went back to experience RS. i don't have the same attachment to games like FE and DQ, which are guilty of some of the same things Pokemon's been doing. the story, the graphics, some features i hardly ever used don't matter much to me. in the end it's still the same franchise i grew up with, Pokemon. and i love Pokemon as a franchise, not so much Gamefreak as a developer and company.
