Yeah, the losing in the appeal round is a cool twist, and I know for example that the other rewatcher in Hoenn wanted them to do that at least once with May. It would've made sense with May, considering how many times she fell on her ass, but it wasn't really clear why Dawn failed here when her appeal seemed perfectly fine (aside from Joanna's squint look). I guess it can be chalked up to "good but just not good enough given the competition," but why that's the case when Zoey, Jessie and Nando got through just fine isn't clear. Hopefully that gets explained a bit in a later episode, since one of the things I hated about Performances in XY was that it was never really clear how the viewer could know that one person was better than the other.
