Dead serious. Why wouldn't you? Sure Ash has his moments of retardation, but that's the point. He's always striving for something and always learning (or re-learning in some cases). The fact of the matter is the anime is for children, and it will always be like this. I never want to see Ash as some protagonist who knows it all, I want someone whose on a journey with me, learning just like I was. And Ash accomplished this when I grew up with the show.
Now that I'm older and no longer watch the show, I occasionally will see some newer episodes, see Ash flail about a bit and it brings a smile to my face. Because he's still the same kid I grew up with, still striving to be the best, only this time helping a new generation to advance in their journeys.
tl;dr, It's a kids show with little character development and should stay that way. Giving it character development just to please older fans is stupid because it's a kids show.
