I beat both SM and USUM just fine with the exp share off, no grinding required, and while I enjoyed PLA well enough I also found myself over leveled for the majority of the game purely from the exp I got catching mons and, yknow, playing the game normally.
The REAL reason my-exp-share was introduced was because gamefreak recognized that most Pokémon players were too retarded to manage their exp investment, and so they created a system where people can freely swap around team members without ever running the risk of falling behind the level curve.
