I believe the idea of the main series games is already perfect (the whole "get a party of 6, get badges, become champion" thing, not the actual games themselves), and while having a great story, Mystery Dungeon is tedious to play for anyone unfamiliar with the kind of game. Pokemon would've died out years ago if PMD was the core of the franchise.
Heck, take a look at your issues with the main series
