He definitely knows there's something up considering he has no qualms shooting mochi directly at people's mouths but I don't think this was always necessarily the case. I'm sure him brainwashing his adoptive parents was completely accidental and he just wanted to give them something nice in the form of sweets. He probably realised people seemed to enjoy mochi a bit too much some time after leaving towards Kitakami.
