Blastoise has always been my favorite, but is outclassed in every way by Gyarados (early-game) and Starmie (late-game and in competitive). There are plenty of good Water-types you can put on your team which aren't starters.
Venusaur doesn't differentiate itself from the dozen other Grass/Poison mons, none of which are particularly useful.
Charizard has a 100% crit Slash, and Toxic+Fire Spin shenanigans. It has the most unique typing of the three, and has a niche over Moltres because of its movepool. Carrying it around also means not having to use a different mon for Fly, most of which are considerably worse.
