Lucas/Dawn are non-characters but they don't need to be, they're just the Professor's assistant, not your butt buddy like Brendan/May were and they're not leeching onto you every other route like the fucksticks in XY.
Barry is miles better of a rival than Calem/Serena.
Cyrus and Lysandre have a totally different motive. Cyrus isn't particularly interesting but he's just plainly selfish and uncaring, while Lysandre's goals don't make any sense and the way he goes about them is hypocritical. We don't even know why Lysandre is such a screwball, they at least gave Cyrus a barebones excuse.
The Sinnoh Gym Leaders have ten times the depth of the Kalos Leaders. Byron and Roark have a father/son dynamic going on, Volkner is aloof and depressive, Maylene inherited her gym from her gambling addict father and is good friends with Candice, etc. The Kalos leaders are cardboard cutouts aside from Korrina and Wulfric who are still basic one-notes. Even the Kanto Leaders got more in FR/LG, hell even by GSC.
