The main problem is the proportions. Pikachu was a lot better when he had no neck and tiny feet, it was cute but still a little monstrous. Current proportions are too slim and the cranium is too large, taking away the animalistic look and thus the primitive cuteness. The proportions are too "refined" and over thought, like fanartists trying to cram a hundred "themes" into a monster instead of just drawing an animal that looks cool.
