I'm going to post this every day until you like it.
None of the blogpost below is directed at anyone in particular, and feel free to tell me I'm full of shit. But there was one point that you-know-who-is said that I actually think is interesting enough to think through out loud:
>A Pokemon character cannot take 47 episodes to decide what they wanna do with their lives (unless you're Brock who took 658 episodes to decide what he wants to do with his life)
I think it's fine for a character to not have their end goal in mind, or even to change their mind several times. I started turning on Serena a bit during those 47 episodes because she didn't seem to have any goals, immediate or distant. Aside from shipping, I guess, but TPC never had the balls to commit to anything, so it was kind of pointless. I just wanted Serena to have something to latch onto during that period to make me interested. And to be fair, the writers had a few things! They just never expanded them. For example:
>Serena made a ninja outfit for Bonnie and Pikachu, showing her fashion skills; maybe have her try to be a fashion designer at some point
>Serena showed a tendency to jump to the worst possible conclusions; extend that past the goddamned haunted house episodes, because that could be funny
>Serena tries to teach Ash to dance (we never get to see Ash's bad dancing)
>Serena starts with a bit of a temper and a foul mouth; have her fall back into that any time Clemont's inventions blow her shit up
>Serena has the YouTube-thing and makes a popular video; maybe she continues doing that until she gets bored (an informed trait of hers, per her mother)
Serena won me back somewhat when she got her arc. I still found May and Dawn's more interesting, but that's an opinion and who gives a fuck what I think? The only real criticism I have is that Serena's role in early XY was off putting because it was part of a larger pacing problem, which she was the most egregious victim of.
