even though we will never get a real ending for Ash and for his story I think that IF there we a winner it is Dawn. It's just the way they treated her throughout her time in the anime. Especially how JN treated Ash and Dawn and Goh and Chloe.
I mean out of the 4(I'll even be generous and toss in Lillie) we have serena, misty, Dawn and Lilie.
Serena
it seems that the staff either hates Serena or never wanted her to get as far as she did. She in all practicality either grew out of the crush or had it removed. I don't think the writers like yajima.
Misty
Shudo SPECIFICALLY mentions that she has no romantic feelings for Ash and never will. so shes out. Not to mention that she really is not all that interesting in terms of writing. shes just kinda there.
Dawn
have the closest relationship out of all the male-female characters, have a dual paring with Goh and Chloe, get shipping moments in all her returns(and in DP), she was the only companion to go see Ash in person at the finals, has Ash sing a line about her in an op, and she turned down numerous other males in favor of Ash.
Lillie
She was very dependent on Ash in SM and even was a little touchy with him at times. they shared a handful of moments in SM but it never went anywhere beyond "being nice"
The pokemon anime accidentally started a race they had no intention of letting anyone win its sad to see that after all this time nothing happens.
I hope HZ has more to offer in its story, especially considering what we have seen so far, I have at least some hope for it, I like what I have seen so far.
