It all fits in a single volume (the chapters were serialized in Nintendo Power leading up to RT's release) but really it's just trimming a lot of the fat, like story-insignificant missions and downtime where you'd just be building your rank in the game (for example nothing about rescuing Magnemite or dealing with the Mankey)
It also cuts the whole meteor/Rayquaza bit and makes Groudon the final world-ending threat, and incorporates Gengar's redemption into the final battle instead of the (in my opinion) lame postgame mission
It just feels a lot more focused overall, and the art's not bad either
Same guy apparently also did a PMD2 manga adaption which I need to check out, don't think it ever made it to the West though, and having only 6 chapters is a lot more of a handicap for Explorers since it's more of a proper story to begin with
