X and Y are pretty great. Yeah, they suffer from a relatively simplistic evil plot and team and a lack of post-game content, but they're laying the groundwork for greater things.
X and Y have introduced Amie, Super Training, a new type, megas, diagonal movement, and a whole host of gameplay improvements that make sense and make the game more fun. Kalos itself is a beautiful, scenic place to explore, the music is fantastic, and features Looker Quest, which is one of the most unique and enjoyable things the franchise has produced. And, while 70 or so new pokemon may not be a huge amount, most of them have interesting quirks like holding your 3DS upside down to evolve it, or Flabebe and Vivillon's collectible colour variations, to Pumpkaboo's stat-affecting sizes. They're all well-thought-out and good additions.
Yes, X and Y aren't as good as some previous games, but they're innovative and are good for the franchise, heralding the move to 3D battles and more modern gameplay elements. Gamefreak, now having set the benchmark with this new gen, are free to refine it further.
The future looks bright, gentlemen.
