I started in the gameboy days but one of the most vivid memories I had was before I had my own GBA, one of my friends let me borrow his SP with Emerald and his little wireless adapter thing because I was gonna be going to Comic Con that weekend and they were having a distribution for the tickets that unlocked the ho-oh/lugia island. Back when you had to go in person to those things. I was so excited to finally play a gen 3 game I went and smoked a bunch of contests for him but unfortunately he didn't think to give me his charger so I had to make do with like 5% of battery for the event.
There was a similar event at a local park a year or so prior, some kind of marketing tour they were doing for RS. I won a strategy guide in a trivia contest and I tried to use that to convince my parents to get me a gba with one of the games, but I'm glad they held off until Emerald dropped.
