This is pokemon, the mechanics haven't changed at all in just a few years. The graphics are 3d which may or may not be better. Fairy isn't too hard to learn, resists and SE wise. Steel doesn't resist ghost/dark anymore.
The only confusing thing for you might be Amie, which is just Nintendogs but pokemon and no frisbee.
