The Arcanine is modeled around Komainu (literally lion-dog) that was borrowed and adopted by Japan.
They're usually positioned outside of Shinto temples as guardian.
The funny thing is, while most people confuse it with stripes, the Arcanine's coat is actually supposed to be brindled, and its tail curved like a Malamute, both popular in Japan. I suppose with got lost in translation as far as its design.
Anyways, how are their IV's? I would be all over it if it's a 6IV shiny.
