It's cool and fun to beat gym leaders and champions from previous regions in a flashy tournament, and XY has no equivalent to it. And while yes the earlier sections of it are quite easy, like with any battle facility, the later portions are difficult enough to be engaging. Is it style over substance? Maybe, but I don't think so. Even if it is, that would only really be an issue if it was the ONLY post-game facility, which it isn't.
You also "forgot" to mention Black Tower, White Tree Hollow, a larger amount of legendaries to capture, medals, and Pokestar Studios.
