Everything from Gens 1 and 2 had their official artwork updated in Gens 3 and 4 respectively in order to better match the modern style. Pic related is Feraligatr's official artwork in Gens 2 and 4.
I know what you're getting at it but isn't a coincidence that the model's coloring matches the official artwork 100% of the time, especially since colors have been all over the place in the past.
