The military began using it with great frequency to stave off vitamin deficiencies and because of its popularity was soon widely served in Japanese schools. The Japanese also began mass production of pic related, making it easy as shit for families to quickly whip together a curry meal with carrots, potatoes and whatever meat they had on hand. Since the cubes needed some preservatives they’re a lot sweeter than “real curry” from Southern Asia. It’s sort of gone from a military meal to a mass produced cheap meal like SPAM to a traditional meal.
Also Japanese curry, IMO is very inferior to say, Tikka Masala. I don’t like the sweetness.
