This reminds me of the case of pikachu, people defending that it was based on a mouse against people who believed it was based on a Pika (An American lagomorph) in the end the creator revealed that it was based on a squirrel and a type of daifuku.
Another case I remember is all those people denied that Samurott was based on a sea lion, even though his creator specifically confirmed this.
