Fundamentally, the problem is that I think pokémon should be imaginable in comfy, loving, everday situations. Can you imagine yourself hugging or petting a Bisharp or a Scyther? Can you imagine a Spiritomb socializing with other pokémon? No, because Spiritomb has that same stupid angry-eyes-and-a-smile face that Darmanitan has. (What's that expression even supposed to convey?)
Contrast with, say, Scizor. I like Scizor, because, even though it looks like one tough motherfucker, it also looks like it's capable of things other than just flying around and slicing everything it sees to pieces.
Cacturne looks like it's always leaning back, even though it isn't, and that weirds me out. It looks poorly drawn. Not sure why I don't like Krooks and Houndoom, though.
