I started boxing my starter at X/Y. Best decision ever... it's so much more fun not having an "ace". All your Pokemon feel like an equal member. It's also a lot of fun catching pokemin on whims and having them switch out other members as soon as you catch the new one.
Not having your starter feels way more fluid in the end. And more fun.
