As an artist, I can really appreciate the watercolor backgrounds and the underlight glow effects for certain attacks. Everything is all computer animated now, there is no more handdrawn animation unless people put out the extra money for it.
But yeah, RBY is so bad you can run it on a calculator. The games definitely weren't what got me into pokemon. After the dubbing team changed the show turned to shit really fast.
Arguably you could mark the end of the show when Ash bids goodbye to Brock and Misty as he decides to head to Hoenn while Misty and Brock stay in Kanto.
