5 animations, and with a team of 143 (128) i think they can crank out plenty of animations in a year. And the beauty of animations, is they can be meh for a bit and be revisited down the line to make them more appealing, as it seems that is one of the big complaints of 3d, is they are pretty basic and bland compared to the dynamic sprites we got. I would argue it is a tough bite to take, but can pay off if you put the time into it so you don't have to make sprites every other generation COUGH COUGH 151 sprites twice red, blue and green.
gold and silver had 2 seperate sprites, and then crystal which added more color and slight animation, FRLG had different sprites from Ruby and Saphire, then emerald addes slight animations again. D&P vs platinum had changes... gen 5 had animations as default for crap sake. I would find redesigning sprites constantly worse than animations that always comes back the the same model as a base...
