Even though the mentor aspect was toned down after the first 30ish episodes, the writers usually had Ash constantly watch over or save May. Like in the episode where Torkoal was captured, May fell down off a cliff and was hanging on the tree branch till Ash saved her, or this Donphan episode where Ash pushed May out of the way before being run over by a Donphan's rollout attack. Or Movie 9 when Ash placed May in the capsule.
People often say Ash was protective over Serena, but he was VERY protective over May in AG. Much moreso than either Misty or Dawn.
