It has supported plain ol' mesh models for over a decade, enjoyed a boost during the pandemic, Linden Labs bought out a very popular in-world vendor sometime ago, and the official viewer got PBR support last year while third-party ones are still playing catch up. It is interesting to see how old the accounts of others are; you'll see those with 10+ years, but more than plenty joined in the last five.
That said, there's also tons of ghost towns and stores that are somehow still a thing to begin with, it's still very passive compared to VR contemporaries, the scripting language still lacks switch statements, and it's probably carried by the easy avatar kitbashing and letting people be shameless with very accessible adult worlds so it's still a giant fetish sandbox. I can totally believe the sentiment of a /vr/trooper saying how it was a lot more creative before Gmod eventually stole its thunder.
In the context of Pokémon, there's one such themed sim around. Suppose it's kinda neat to look around since there's some secrets here and there on top of some features like the Sharpedo Bluff. Of course, the level of verisimilitude that avatars bear will massively vary.
