The healthy approach is to include your watermark in a unobtrusive location on the image that can't be easily cropped off (close to, but not smack in the middle of, the focal point of the work, rather than on the corners that often get trimmed when an image is reposted) but is visible enough for anyone interested to find your username. Note that signing the corner is also a perfectly good method, and this is up to personal preference. Pic related is a good example of this philosophy.
