When he speaks of the Yuki-Onna, she leaves him, but spares his life out of respect for the father of her children.
And if you'd read the mission flow I'd posted, you'd see two Snorunt with part of the man's journal, the Froslass with the other half and the clear inference the *whole* journal was held by his family. Because it mirrored the real-world tales of the direct inspiration for the pokémon Froslass.
