To anyone looking for a Leaf Stone and/or Fire Stone, but not wanting to wait for that kid on Route 36 to give you one (or to spend the next hour of your life smashing rocks), there IS another way to get one. You'll have to have beaten Jasmine and gotten the Surf and Whirlpool HMs.
In the Whirl Island closest to Cianwood--the one you have to enter from the north--there's a cave that starts as a straight line to a ladder hole. Climb down that and you should immediately notice that you're on an elevated rock bed. There's stairs to your immediate southeast, but you can also continue southwards along the raised terrain for a while until you hit another staircase. There should be a dead end path to your left and another raised path to the east; follow the latter a short way until you find a ladder. Climb down that, and there should be a dead end room that looks like this, but has two items. The one to the left is a Fire Stone, and the one to the right is a Leaf Stone.
