Even within the confines of the 1st gen, the least popular Pokemon are the ones that lack ambiguity (Tauros, Seaking, Pidgey, Seel, Farfetch'd, etc.) And plenty of Pokemon that were based directly on animals (Blastoise family, Golbat, Staryu family, Primeape family, etc.) still had an element of vague impressionism rather than real-life animal features. While ambiguity alone doesn't ensure great designs, it certainly is an aspect that should be considered when creating new digimons.
