As far as competitive capabilities are concerned, I find them to be the same way. Blastoise was good before its mega, Feraligatr is an offensive powerhouse with Swords Dance or Dragon Dance, Swampert is a fucking tank with only one weakness and two great STABS, Empoleon might be somewhat lacking, but can be quite good if used properly, Samurott is also good, not to mention one of the most under-appreciated Pokemon out there, and Greninja, well, I think we all know what's going on with him.
tl;dr Water starters are bretty alright guys
