At least in the actual canon, it's more like friendly competition, like a safer magical version of MMA.
The best Pokemon moments are the ones where they're sapient and emotional, NOT when they're vapid marketability side critters like you want them to be. You just want the, to be as shallow and soulless as possible because you hate them. If CUNTjiri or anyone else in the Pokemon corporate hierarchy says that's what Pokemon should be, it's wrong of them to say that.
