i thought spheal and walrein were really cool as a kid and i wanted to use them on my team when replaying gen 3, but they can only be found in that cave at the same time that you have access to the 7th gym
technically you can skip the 6th gym because it only gives you access to fly, so you can get the spheal and back track to flannery, but most of the game has already been completed by that point
if pokemon is about anything, its about having an adventure with your pokebuddies, but some of these guys only being accessible after the game is over/mostly over sucks the wind out those sails
