He was portrayed as some kind of Ash 2.0 but in the span of a single generation while also not being a battler and not knowing what the heck he wants to be.
Look at characters like May or Dawn, who had a slow but steady pace in meeting some of Ash's companions. Spending a few episodes with them, learning things about them. May/Max bonded with Misty, Dawn bonded with May and Iris.
That's what bonding means. Not just "gotta meet 'em all" every 10-15 episodes.
