People were more critical of a similar fisher price artstyle in a game like Link's Awakening that had noticeably more polish than the DP remakes, and rightfully wouldn't stop complaining about the constant drops to 20fps in Hyrule Warriors when we see Pokemon fans praising actual 10fps gameplay.
Am I going crazy? Because I legitimately cannot process how grown adults want to hold their favorite franchise to a different standard so that it'll never want to legitimately improve in quality. There's no reason not to give GF for trying to go in a new direction, but "trying" is the operative word: we still should not be brushing off the fact that their games get mogged in visual fidelity and performance by PS2-era games and we deserve better.
