Before Gold and Silver came out (before big internet reveals), my local bookstore was filled with knockoff pokemon magazines (which are now probably lost to time) going into crazy theories and fake pokemon reveals. Some actually had real content from Japan. Staying and reading them all was an experience in itself. You had to figure out what was real and what was fake. But even the endless "reveals" of fake pokemon and new pokelore was an experience in itself.
The hype for Gen II was unreal, pokemania was blasting at full power
